New York trucker stops an active shooter from escaping

64-year-old Timothy VanNostrand received the Goodyear Highway Hero Award, which is given to drivers who act beyond their job duties.

Timothy is an owner-operator of a logging transport company. So, helping the cops with an active shooter situation was beyond his normal duties.

But when he was driving along Interstate 88, his instincts took over as he passed a New York State Trooper during a dangerous traffic stop.

He saw the officer skip sideways then the shooter pulled out a gun and fired shots through the back window. The police officer started firing back as a shootout ensued and bullets were flying.

According to Fox News, Timothy used his tractor-trailer to block the suspect from escaping during an intense 12-minute ordeal.

When backup arrived, the state trooper who was wounded during the gunfight was taken to the hospital. Luckily, he survived and later honored Timothy with other New York State Police officers.

Joe Burker, Vice President of Goodyear North America Commercial Business, shared that the purpose of the Highway Hero program is to bring more awareness and appreciation to the powerful impact that commercial drivers can have on roads, lives, and communities.

Burker continued to explain that the Goodyear Highway Hero Awards is one way Goodyear recognizes the importance of the commercial trucking industry. It helps move 72.5 percent of the United States’ economic goods.

Over 3.3 million professional truck drivers are not only a vital part of the supply chain industry. They also act beyond their job duties to safeguard others on the roads.
