It’s easy to think that every Toyota SUV is extremely dependable. The brand simply has a reputation for being long-lasting. However, not every model is created equally. The most reliable Toyota SUV might not be the model you expect.

What is the most reliable Toyota SUV?

Currently, the most reliable Toyota SUV is the 2025 Toyota Highlander. While this SUV has been available for years, it just doesn’t stand out like the RAV4 or 4Runner. It only sold 89,658 models.

The Highlander has a reliability rating of 84 out of 100 from J.D.Power. This is an above-average score that sets it ahead of the pack.

The rankings are based on owner feedback after three years of ownership. They’re sent surveys to report any issues they may have faced, from paint chipping to total transmission failure.

Now the 2025 Toyota RAV4 is the most popular SUV. It sold 475,193 models in the United States, blowing past the Highlander. But it only has an average reliability score of 77.

The Toyota 4Runner is a reliability legend, but the current generation doesn’t have a score. Early indications report that it’s expected to have an average score, and it sold 92,156 models in 2024.

Also, the tiny Toyota Corolla Cross sold 93,201 models in 2024. It represents the small SUV class well with an above-average reliability rating of 93,201.

The Toyota Sequoia is another popular nameplate, despite only selling 26,097 models in 2024. It has a reliability score of 80.

So, being popular doesn’t mean an SUV is reliable. Also, reputations associated with rugged SUVs that used to last forever may need to be updated.
