Are you ready for a plot twist? Honda and Toyota SUVs are often thought of as the most reliable options. However, there’s a new reliable SUV king in town. Well, I should say kings, because there is a tie for first place among American brands.

What is the most reliable small SUV?

Drum roll, please! There is actually a two-way tie for the most reliable small SUV. The Ford Bronco Sport and Chevrolet Equinox managed to earn the same score of 88 out of 100 from J.D.Power.

Scores between 70 and 80 are average, while anything between 81 and 90 is above average. Then scores between 91 and 100 are best. Honestly, it’s rare to see any vehicle earn a score higher than 85.

According to U.S.News, these rankings are based on feedback from unbiased owners after three years of ownership.

Surveys are sent out to drivers, allowing them to report on any problems they may have faced. Everything from paint problems, engine trouble, to faulty electronics is covered. So we can assume SUV owners are having trouble-free experiences with the Ford Bronco Sport and Chevy Equinox

The Honda HR-V failed to make the list of most reliable small SUVs. However, it has a reliability score of 82. Also, the Toyota Corolla Cross failed to earn a spot in the top 25. It has a reliability score of 79.

If you move up to mid-size SUVs, the Chevy Traverse wins the top spot with a score of 88. The Ford Explorer earned an 87. But the popular Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are missing!
