Video: monster truck tire flies off during stadium show
Most folks would say, “the tires.” Most monster trucks run custom tires 66 inches tall and 43 inches wide. The oversized rubber alone weighs 800 to 900 pounds. Add in the wheels and you’re looking at a ton of extra weight on each axle. As a stadium full of monster truck enthusiasts in Washington state learned, these big rigs’ signature component can also be their most dangerous.
If you’ve ever rolled a spare tire down a hill, you know they just keep going. Once a tire gets rolling, its momentum keeps it upright. It’s designed to roll and usually won’t stop until it hits something. Now imagine a 1,000-pound wheel and tire breaking loose in a stadium.
A Monster Truck Launches Its Oversized Wheel and Tire
The monster truck in question is called “Veteran.” The traveling show it was part of is named “The Malicious Monster Truck Tour.” During Veteran’s stint, it smashed cars, did wheelies, and bounded over dirt jumps. When Veteran landed the tallest jump, one of its front tires snapped off at the hub. The truck skidded along the ground and stopped, but the 1,000-plus-pound wheel and tire kept going.
Luckily for everyone present, the truck wasn’t facing the grandstands when it landed the jump. Its wheel raced toward the edge of the stadium. Instead of hitting the wall, it rocketed off another jump. Then it flew over the wall and into the parking lot beyond. You can see two angles of the incident in the videos embedded below. Keep scrolling for the aftermath.
The wheel and tire came down directly on top of a Kia Spectra in the parking lot. It completely pancaked that first car, bounced, and did serious damage to a Subaru before rolling to a stop.
My favorite thing about that second video is that the announcer didn’t even miss a beat. You can barely hear him over the panicked audience members, but he definitely shouts “Veteran!” “insanity!” and “tearing it up!” as if the flying tire was the show’s carefully planned finale.
