Michigan state Rep. loses House floor speaking privileges after wrapping another lawmaker’s BMW in plastic [Video]
You don’t see this one in “The West Wing.” A prank caused a distracting ruckus in the Michigan House after Rep. Julie Brixie (D, Meridian Township) caught her Republican colleague parked across two spots. One of them was allegedly hers. She responded like a college freshman with a Costco membership: The Rep. wrapped his BMW in plastic while an aide recorded the stunt.
Video released by House Republicans shows Brixie wrapping the midsection of Rep. Matt Maddock’s car on April 17. Later that day, she got on the House floor and said, “I just came in from the parking ramp and there’s a black BMW… Your hood is open, your lights are on and your engine is running. Thank you.”
The BMW prank backfired. A House GOP official said Brixie lost her floor-speaking privileges and her parking spot
Reportedly, the punishment is mostly in response to lying to the House. After all, the BMW wasn’t in the state she claimed. Instead, she fibbed to bring attention to her prank.
Brixie seemed to treat the whole event as if she and Maddock are close, but it turns out the BMW was his wife’s, and the couple’s public response was mixed.
Maddock replied on social media. “She keeps trying to get my attention and I keep telling her I’m married.” He added, “I can forgive her for pranking my car, but she should really be sorry for her awful votes that have been ruining Michigan.”
His wife, Meshawn Maddock, also chimed in on social media. NBC News quoted the post: “Rep Brixie makes a false statement otherwise known as a LIE in the presence of the entire Michigan House, after wrapping my car in plastic wrap like a 13 year old girl. Democrats aren’t just soft on crime, like Brixie, they are crime.” Ouch.
By the way, Meshawn is a former Michigan GOP co-chair. She’s currently charged in the state’s fake electors case related to the 2020 election. She pleaded not guilty and says the case is “politically motivated.”
Lesson learned: in Lansing, bring popcorn. And if you take up two spots with your BMW, joke’s on you.
