Most mechanics expect to find busted belts, bad gaskets, or maybe a fried alternator when they pop a hood. Not a terrified, furry stowaway bunny.

But that’s exactly what one tech found while working on a car being prepped for sale. A rabbit had wedged itself deep into the engine bay, completely stuck. The more the bunny struggled, the worse it got. Some coworkers wanted to push or pull it out, but that could’ve hurt the little guy. That’s when our hero stepped in.

“It wasn’t even my job,” he admitted. “But when I saw him, I took over the job so I could get him out safely.”

That turned out to be easier said than done. The bunny wasn’t just stuck—it was really stuck. No amount of coaxing worked. When the undertray was removed, instead of hopping away, it panicked and burrowed even deeper into the car.

“I was petting it while it was stuck, hoping it would feel less scared and maybe free itself,” the tech explained. “But it just kept pushing in further.”

The mechanic disassembles the car to save a bunny rabbit

So, plan B. He had to start disassembling the car. Bit by bit, the front end came off. Finally, after 40 minutes of careful work, he reached in and pulled the little guy free.

That’s when the bunny rabbit showed its appreciation—the only way a wild animal knows how.

“Yes, he tried his best to dismember me upon removal,” the mechanic laughed. “If I wasn’t wearing thick gloves, he’d have tore me apart.”

The furry escape artist wasted no time. The second it was out of his hands, it bolted.

“I was gonna try and put him somewhere safe,” he said. “But as soon as I got out the door, he escaped my hands and ran off.”

The internet had plenty to say about the daring rescue. “Good job detailing, got all the hare out,” one user quipped. Another joked, “The space was a hare smaller than he anticipated.” But beyond the puns, people applauded the mechanic’s kindness.

One stranger was so moved, they even offered to buy him dinner. “You may have just started a generosity train, my friend,” the tech responded.

Not all heroes wear capes. But coveralls are far more practical anyway. See the original bunny rescue post below:

Just saved this lil guy. I had to remove the front end of the vehicle to do it, but he is now free and alive and well
