A woman says that dating a mechanic might just be the best life hack. That’s because every time she has any sort of trouble with her car, she can just have her boyfriend fix it for her. 

“ If you are going to date a man for any reason outside of the fact that he is a loving, kind, wonderful human being — please, dear God, let it be for the fact that he is a mechanic,” said Cameron Johnston (@cameron_johnst0n), a TikTok content creator, in a video with over 1,180 views on the platform. 

Johnston isn’t the only one seeking out a mechanic or technically-savvy individual as a partner. Based on the comments on her post, others, too, prefer the company of kinesthetic-minded individuals with stable incomes. Johnston said that every car problem she’s had has gotten fixed due to her relationship, but what other pros are there to dating a mechanic?

Mechanics’ Positive Attributes 

Generally, commenters agreed that dating or even marrying a mechanic can have a ton of positive attributes. It isn’t all because of the free oil changes. Rather, they say inherent aspects of the work attracts certain personalities. 

Many women prefer partners who are financially stable, and mechanics can definitely tend to be. According to resources like Invoice Fly, entry-level technicians start out making around $36,000 or more. Later in a technician’s career, they can make upward of $80,000. There’s also healthy growth in the automotive industry with a large amount of jobs opening up across the country. 

Anecdotally, women also prefer men who are reliable. Many mechanics have stable income, which makes them more reliable overall with room to grow in their industry. On TikTok, commenters agreed, generally saying that their lives are happy and fulfilled. 

“Married a mechanic. And he bought me a new car so he wouldn’t have to fix anything,” one commenter said. 

“I’m engaged to a mechanic, little did he know he signed up [to] be my pitcrew for the rest of his life [as a] racer-mechanic duo,” another added. 

Dating Mechanics—A Surprisingly Common Tip

Johnston isn’t the only one thirsting after free oil changes. It turns out, there’s even online dating sites specifically designed for people seeking mechanics.

On discussion-based platforms like Reddit, users directly recommended “[dating] a mechanic” at some point in life. “Do yourself a favor, and date a mechanic at some point. Remain friends and amicable after the break up. You will need this person later in life, and they will come out and hook you up if you get stranded. Remember this,” one poster said.

Other blogs identified mechanics as dependable problem solvers who have fascinating day-to-day work lives. So, Johnston isn’t the only one who’s happy with an oil-tinged beau.
