Imagine you come home from your Sunday errands to find a mysterious car blocking your driveway. You don’t recognize it from your neighborhood. When you walk around it to carry your groceries in through the back door you see a shape in your yard. It’s a man, passed out and sleeping in the grass.

According to the Greater Long Island news website, this is exactly what happened to a Southhampton family. They returned home at 12:57 PM on Sunday afternoon. There was a random SUV, and a random man, at their home. Naturally, they immediately called the town police force. That’s when things got really weird.

The Southampton Town Police arrived to investigate the uninvited napper. They ran the plates of the SUV and found it had been reported stolen from New York City the night before.

Police woke the man, eager for answer to a growing list of questions. Mathew Wynhurst (34) of Brooklyn confirmed to police that the vehicle wasn’t his. He’s now facing charges of third-degree criminal trespassing and second-degree criminal possession of stolen property. He was held overnight at police headquarters.

There are crazy weekends, then there are “Whose car is this and whose backyard am I sleeping in?” weekends. The drive from Brooklyn to Southampton is about two hours. So it’s safe to say Wynhurst drove around for a while before finally choosing a random backyard to get some shuteye.
