Louisiana man runs his second Toyota Tundra up to 1 million miles
Victor Shepherd is quite the Toyota Tundra whisperer. He made headlines when he put one million miles on the odometer of his 2007 Toyota Tundra work truck. Toyota jumped at the opportunity to publicize the vehicle’s reliability. The automaker traded him even up for a brand new Tundra to study the old one. Well, now Shepherd’s ran a second Tundra up to a million miles.
Shepherd’s first million mile Toyota Tundra
Louisiana native Victor Shepherd is a truck driver with Hotshot. He bought a new 2007 Toyota Tundra for work. Then he proceeded to put 125,000 miles a year on the thing. He replaced the transmission at 860,000 miles (though he jokes that he made the appointment at 780,000 miles, but the shop was busy). The rest of the truck had barely a scratch. In just nine years on the road, he rolled over from 999,999 miles to one million.
Toyota heard about Shepherd’s million mile truck and asked to study it. They offered to trade even up for a 2016 Toyota Tundra Limited. There was only one problem: Shepherd is such a Toyota die-hard, he’d already bought a replacement work truck. His replacement truck was a 2014 Tundra.
With his 2007 Tundra shipped back to Toyota, Shepherd was left with two trucks. He had his basic 2014 Toyota Tundra work truck. He also had a 2016 Toyota Tundra for personal use.
Shepherd’s second million mile Toyota Tundra
On December 28, 2023 Shepherd announced his 2014 Toyota Tundra work truck had hit 900,000 miles. But he his business had a slow year and he didn’t put many miles on the truck. Finally, over a year later, he’s broken one million miles in his second Toyota Tundra.
Shepherd says he took his Tundra to the local Toyota dealership for scheduled maintenance 117 times. What about the powertrain? He had to swap out his transmission once and his alternator gave out too. Otherwise, his 2014 Toyota Tundra only needed routine maintenance.
Shepherd joked, “These trucks are safe and dependable. I think, if you see a Toyota on the side of the road, it might be a scam because they just don’t break down very often.”
No word yet on whether Toyota will trade Shepherd’s million mile 2014 for a brand new Tundra. And would Shepherd take a brand new Tundra with its turbocharged V6 which is already the subject of one recall? Maybe he’ll cycle his V8-powered 2016 Toyota Tundra into work truck duty and think about it for a million more miles. That probably won’t take long.
