License plate clue helps police catch hit-and-run driver
Erika Bruce, a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, was driving back to her desert home from Barstow, California, when everything changed. Her dash cam captured a driver on Interstate 15 plowing into the back of her van, forcing her off the highway and into a ditch.
The crash was so intense, her remaining strength was used to dial 911. Emergency personnel rushed her to a nearby hospital, where Bruce was put on life support. Doctors told 8 News they’re not sure about her chances of survival.
Erika’s mother and daughter visit their loved one as often as they can, praying she’ll pull through.
“The chances of her waking up are slim to none, we’re waiting and just giving her some time,” said Tyana Samual, Erika’s daughter. “Any possible miracle could happen.”
The driver left crucial evidence on Bruce’s van
Tyana and her grandmother filed a report with the California Highway Patrol. Officers inspecting the van found the runaway driver left damning evidence on Bruce’s van.
Imprinted on the impact site was the driver’s license plate number, which was clearly legible.
While CHP investigates a person of interest, Tyana and her grandmother draw from each other’s strengths.
“Whoever did this, I hope they turn themselves in because I couldn’t live without my baby,” said Erika’s mother.
Viewers were sympathetic to the family
“She was just trying to get home. Nowadays, you could be doing nothing wrong and your life is forever changed due to some idiot,” wrote a viewer.
Many viewers couldn’t understand how the driver left the scene after seeing Bruce crash into a ditch.
“Who leaves the scene of an accident like that? What a freaking horrible person to leave someone and not do something as simple as call 911,” they wrote.
A keen viewer mentioned the imprint of the license plate.
“Sheesh, how hard did they hit her to imprint the license plate on the vehicle?” they asked.
