[Watch] Lexus drives through wet tar on video, sparking debate over whether the driver or contractor is to blame
Seal Boiiz is a seal coating company in California that posts videos on YouTube (@sealboiiz) of their work on both private and public roads. In a recent video, which is currently sitting at 10 million views, an elderly couple in a Lexus SUV was filmed driving through a freshly sealed section of road.
“I had a feeling,” he said in the video, zooming in on the white Lexus spraying wet tar on its underside.
The road was in a suburban area, and when the man behind the camera finally coaxed the couple out of the wet tar, he told the driver they needed to leave or they were going to “ruin it even more.”
“See all those tracks you made?” he said, pointing the camera back to the tracks left on the wet tar. “You got it all over your paint, man.”
The driver sped away, clearly embarrassed, and the video ended. The video may be only 0:54 long, but the debate as to who’s to blame is still ablaze in the comments section. As of right now, there are 14,000 comments.
Some viewers say the Lexus driver is the dummy
A handful of viewers felt the driver should have been able to tell something was amiss with the road, and should have stopped driving. Others said the contractors need to be careful in case they decide to sue.
“That’s the same person that will sue you to have their paint restored,” wrote a commenter, earning 111,000 thumbs up.
Another viewer wrote the property management company or HOA is responsible for not properly notifying homeowners of the road work.
“I’ve been in this industry for 12 years now and have only had this issue a couple of times. Lack of proper notice is the main reason,” they wrote. “Either on the company’s, HOA’s, or property management company’s end. We also make sure proper notice is given by all companies involved.”
Another person said the Lexus driver was dumb for living in a subdivision.
“So many smart people living in this community,” they said.
Most, however, blamed the contractor for the damage
A majority of commenters noted a lack of signs, barriers, or cones to warn the driver of road work.
“This is 100% on you,” wrote a commenter. “I’m in the construction industry, and this exact example is why you put barriers up and only do half the road at a time, and not during the day.”
One commenter implied the creator may be putting drivers in that situation on purpose.
“The fact I’ve seen this happen multiple times to this guy, probably his fault for not putting up signs or notifying homeowners,” they wrote.
Someone else indicated the man behind the camera was the offender.
“No signs, no barriers, no one directing traffic?” they asked. “The driver didn’t mess up, YOU did.”
