Car theft’s on the rise, but some models stay ice-cold on the hot list. They don’t end up in shipping containers, joyrides, police reports, or shady rebuild shops. Whether it’s because they’re tech-heavy, low-demand, or just a pain to steal—these four vehicles have cracked the code.

Electric vehicles dominate the list of least stolen cars. And Tesla owns the leaderboard.

The Highway Loss Data Institute found, “every Tesla nameplate appears on this list least likely to be stolen.” For 2020–2022 models, “the Model 3 electric midsize luxury sedan has a claim frequency of 0.” That’s not just low—it’s zero.

Want a crossover instead? “The Model Y has a claim frequency of 0.” Need a luxury option? “The Model X has a claim frequency of 0.” Even the aging Model S posted “a claim frequency of 0.” Tesla’s entire lineup lives on the no-theft zone.

Commenters say it’s not just chance. “Tesla cars are a pain to steal,” wrote @ChristianBlueChimp. “You also need the driver’s phone, maybe also a pin code… Tesla can lock the car, track it and make it pull over.” @BigTWebz agreed: “Tesla just makes it harder to steal because the car is connected in real time.”

Volvo builds the world’s least exciting target

Some cars don’t need fancy tech. They just don’t show up on crooks’ radar.

Enter Volvo.

For the XC90, the data’s simple: “Volvo XC90 4dr has a claim frequency of 0.” That’s not just good for a family SUV—it’s the gold standard. The XC60 and XC40 were right behind, with frequencies of 1 and 2.

Add in their hybrid offerings and Volvo dominates the least stolen cars category.

GMC Acadia and Chevy Trailblazer: forgettable in the best way

Many people are looking for the best SUVs to buy and auto mechanics know which don't fit the bill. Here is a list of 5 bad ones.

GMC’s Acadia doesn’t make headlines. But that’s the point. “GMC Acadia 4dr has a claim frequency of 1.” Meanwhile, its cousin, “Chevrolet Trailblazer 4dr has a claim frequency of 1.”

These midsize crossovers blend into parking lots, stay under the radar, and make zero noise in insurance reports. For car thieves, they’re not worth the hassle. And for drivers? That makes them money well spent.

These least stolen cars lead the league in defense

Some cars have horsepower. Others have resale value. These have something better: peace of mind. When it comes to avoiding the chop shop, these four make the all-defense team.
