Every story has at least two sides. But this one is a tragedy no matter how you look at it. The death of a woman named Laterrika Woods during a police chase in Arkansas is making headlines because her brother is a successful Memphis rapper. But the 29-year-old killed when a Ram truck fleeing Arkansas State Police crashed was also a mother. And now she’s gone forever.

According to the ASP, officers signaled for 30-year-old Torkilo Hambrick to pull his truck over on I-40. Distractify reports say Hambrick and the two women in his truck were returning to Memphis after a birthday outing. That means they were driving away from Little Rock—and still over an hour from home. Hambrick chose not to pull over and the Arkansas State Police chased him.

Hambrick drove east at speeds that exceeded 120 mph. After 18 miles, the Arkansas State Police decided to end the chase—by any means necessary. Troopers purposefully struck the rear of Hambrick’s truck to force it off the road. The top-heavy vehicle rolled over, ejecting and killing Woods. An outlet called HypeFresh reports the other passenger—Taricaa Lashay—also suffered serious injuries, including an amputated arm.

Aftermath of the tragic Arkansas police chase

After the chase, the Arkansas State Police arrested Hambrick. Officers found two guns, money, a bottle of promethazine, marijuana, and other drugs in the vehicle. They charged Hambrick with Woods’ death. In a news release, ASP Col. Mike Hager says, “This tragedy is a direct result of the suspect’s reckless, selfish actions. This is another example of what can happen when a suspect flees from law enforcement.”

John Lotts, who performs under the name Big Boogie, took to Instagram to mourn his older sister, Laterrika Woods: “I Love You Sister. Tears Tears Tears. @_dadonwoo. I’m Logging Off Today.” Col. Hager says the rapper hasn’t made a statement since his Instagram post.

If the ASP hadn’t struck Hambrick’s truck, would Woods still be alive? We’ll never truly know. But a 120 mph chase spanning 18 miles put hundreds of other motorists’ lives in danger. Bystanders are killed in police chases all the time. ASP was attempting to protect and serve as many bystanders as possible.

It’s a complicated issue. But one thing is clear: it’s tragic that Lotts lost his sister—and even more tragic that Lotts’ nephew will grow up without his mom.
