Kia and Hyundai settle $9 million lawsuit over theft

TikTok helped the ‘Kia Boyz’ go viral for exposing how easily Hyundai and Kia models could be stolen. This launched a dangerous trend of countless thefts as these cars and SUVs became extremely popular targets.

Police officers reported an immediate increase in theft as the vehicles could easily be hot wired with tools like a screwdriver.

Kia and Hyundai have settled a lawsuit involving 36 states over claims that they didn’t do enough to prevent their cars from being stolen. They didn’t install preventative technology like engine immobilizers to deter thieves.

The automakers will pay out $9 million dollars as a result, and the lawsuit covers vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022.

According to NBC Connecticut, the companies will reimburse some owners who had their vehicles stolen, as it may have caused serious disruptions to daily life.

The automakers have been making substantial efforts to increase vehicle security. They have been working with law enforcement and officials to combat thefts.

For example, through local police departments, you can get free steering wheel locks and other aftermarket security devices. Plus, you can have a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder projector installed at a local dealership for free.
