Kansas University basketball fans received unwelcome news this week. Assistant coach Joe Dooley will miss time with the team following an arrest. The school suspended him for three weeks.

Head coach Bill Self said Dooley “exercised poor judgement,” leading to his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence and failure to stop at an accident. Self added, “Joe is remorseful, apologetic and accepts the consequences of his actions.”

Dooley has served as an assistant coach at Kansas on and off since 2003. He has also held head coaching positions at East Carolina and Florida Gulf Coast.

Recent DUI arrests extend beyond Kansas

Dooley is not the only college coach to face legal trouble related to driving. Virginia Commonwealth University basketball coach and athletic director Ed McLaughlin was arrested by police earlier this year after crashing his Cadillac Escalade while leaving a golf tournament.

Police initially charged McLaughlin with driving under the influence. Prosecutors later reduced the charge to reckless driving. He also faces a yearlong license suspension for refusing a breathalyzer test.
