The United Parcel Service is looking for about 105,000 drivers to voluntarily resign from their positions. A federal judge in Massachusetts approves of the UPS $150,000 buyout plan.
UPS is restructuring its delivery network and doesn’t need as many trucks or drivers due to shrinking volumes. Truck operators will probably be notified of this opportunity next week.
According to Yahoo, the Teamsters Union argues that the planned voluntary separation program violates the national master agreement. It wasn’t negotiated with the union and reverses hiring commitments.
But Judge Denise Casper shares, “The union has failed to show that it will suffer irreparable harm in the absence of an injunction.”
UPS is expanding the Driver Choice program to 105,000 employees, regardless of seniority, with a $150,000 lump sum payment. Those who accept the offer agree to never work for UPS again and want their rights to union representation.
Expect to see less brown trucks in traffic. The average daily volume declined by 8.6% in 2024 and was down 10.8% year over year during the fourth quarter.
Amazon continues drawing down business under a mutual agreement as UPS outsources certain economy shipments to the United States Postal Service. The intent of the program is to reduce the number of employees who could be released through layoffs.
