Ever heard the expression, “Kicking someone while they’re down?” This is the perfect example. Brutal winter storms got the better of one poor Indiana driver, and then when someone offered to help, it turned out they wanted to steal her car instead.

Around 7:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night, the woman was walking along the snowy road in Evansville when someone stopped to offer assistance. Naturally, she showed them where her vehicle was stuck in the snow. So they stole it.

Police haven’t made it clear whether the car theft was a tow truck driver who was able to just drag the vehicle away. As other tow truck drivers have. Or whether it was a team who offered to help her drive it out, then drove away with it. The Evansville PD did say,“This person thought that someone was genuinely there to help them and ended up taking their vehicle…It’s a crime of opportunity and using someone’s goodwill against them.”

Unfortunately, the victim didn’t have a ton of information about the thief. But all the police needed was a description of her car. “The victim flagged down our officers, reported that the vehicle was stolen, gave a little bit of information as far as a possible suspect, and then ultimately today the vehicle was recovered…It wasn’t occupied, so there haven’t been any arrests made yet.”

Did this grinch have a change of heart? It’s unclear. But I’m sure the woman’s thrilled to have her car back.
