Two women in Michigan are lucky to be alive after a kidnapping and attempted murder. Police officers share that the only reason why the incident didn’t result in murder is due to a firearm malfunction. But a woman was still dragged by an SUV.

Gun malfunction prevents murder as Michigan woman is forced into SUV

A neighbor was just trying to help during a kidnapping attempt in Lansing, Michigan. A woman called 911, saying she was kidnapped around 2:40 am. But the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Maurice Ray Jr., threw her out of his SUV, dragging her by the knees.

The victim was at home when Ray returned to take her a second time. Her neighbor approached them to help as Ray pointed a gun at her and pulled the trigger. The gun didn’t fire a bullet, and the victim was forced into a Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Police officers quickly spotted the SUV in traffic as Ray refused to pull over. He led a three-mile chase with speeds exceeding 90 mph before he was stopped. Also, he threw a loaded 9mm pistol with an unspent round in the chamber out of the vehicle.

According to M Live, Ray is sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, which is the maximum penalty for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Special Agent James Deir with the Detroit Field Division shares, “He illegally armed himself, kidnapped and assaulted his girlfriend, and then attempted to fire a gun at a neighbor who stepped in to help.”

He continues to explain,  “The only explanation why this incident did not result in a murder is because the firearm malfunctioned.”
