The Grocery Store With the Most Gas Stations in the U.S. Isn’t Walmart, But It’s Vying for the Win
For a lot of us, a fuel stop is just another errand. But some stores are quietly working to make it easier to top off the tank while you’re checking off your grocery list. Walmart leads that push this year, since it planned to open or remodel more than 45 fuel stations in 2025.
These stations sell fuel, snacks, bevvies, and other essentials. Walmart+ members can save up to 10 cents per gallon, giving a small perk for those who shop regularly. And while the company often talks about its 400-plus remodeled or full-service branded stations across 34 states, the total number of Walmart stores selling gas exceeds 1,500. That’s because it sells petrol at more than 1,000 other locations…it’s just not Walmart brand.
But that’s still not enough to beat out another grocery chain.
Kroger actually operates the largest number of grocery-based gas stations in the U.S., with 1,680 sites
Other major players include Costco with 559, Sam’s Club with 531, and Albertsons/Safeway and its legacy banners with 377. According to NACS, a global trade association, together with Walmart, these five chains account for nearly 70% of all hypermarket-style stores selling fuel nationwide.
Dave DeSerio, Walmart’s vice president of fuel and convenience, explained that these stations are part of meeting customer demand for low prices and convenience. Drivers can fill up and shop in the same parking lot. Adding the new refueling spots in 2025, the chain is definitely closing the gap with Kroger.
Whether Kroger or Walmart comes out on top in total locations probably matters less to most of us than the fact that more and more Americans can fill their tank during a routine grocery run.
