Can you buy govt pickup trucks at auction during DOGE cuts?
During his second term, President Donald Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency. The department is part of the Executive branch, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk serving as the President’s advisor. DOGE claims it’s saved taxpayers $55 billion, but is controversial because it has led to over 280,000 layoffs. So is there currently an opportunity to get surplus government equipment–such as pickup trucks–for cheap? Yes, but maybe not any more opportunity than normal.
When government organizations get rid of assets they no longer need, they often need to auction these assets off. Why? Because they owe it to taxpayers to get as much money as possible. The result is a series of government auctions all across the country. They are compiled on multiple websites, including GovDeals.com. So are there trucks available now?
Here are the government trucks available for auction
The truth is GovDeals currently lists nearly 600 pickup trucks for sale. But this is about average for the website. So what kind of government trucks can you get? Most of them are base trim work trucks. Many are half-tons with a regular cab and long bed. Some are heavy-duty trucks, many of those diesels. They are almost all being retired from government fleets, so they are coming up for private sale.
Is it a good idea to buy a retired fleet truck? Well that depends. The downside is that if you buy a truck that has a snowplow frame or heavy trailer hitch, it’s often wise to budget to maintain it as if it has twice the mileage on the odometer.
The upside of a government fleet truck is that most have had every service done, at the intervals the automaker recommends. Many even come with service records. I noticed a surprising number of midsize pickup trucks, and these may have had easier lives and thus be in better shape. Government auctions often include impounded vehicles, so they may have cars and even motorcycles for sale.
Will there be a flood of vehicles available as the government continues to downsize? Probably not, but we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, you can check out the vehicles already listed on GovDeals.com. You can also see the process of buying vehicles at government auction in the video embedded below:
