It usually starts the same way. A check engine light flicks on, and the driver shrugs, thinking, “Probably just a gas cap.” Well, GM wants to make sure that doesn’t happen with one particular trouble code, so it’s rolling out an urgent software update to put the warning front and center.

GM’s new Service Update N252510321 launched this month and covers several 2021–2024 trucks and SUVs from Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac

That includes popular models like the Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade.

The initiative, coined Service Update N252510321, doesn’t change how the vehicles run. Instead, it adds a clear Driver Information Center (DIC) message when diagnostic code P0016 sets, along with the usual check engine light.

P0016 is a big deal

It flags a mismatch between the camshaft and crankshaft signals, which can point to timing or sensor issues.

Left unchecked, it can lead to expensive repairs. GM explained that too many owners might ignore a simple check engine light, so the new on-screen message makes the warning harder to overlook.

The update doesn’t fix the root cause. It just makes sure drivers know to schedule service immediately

The rollout started in August 2025 as a phased release. Some owners will see an over-the-air (OTA) prompt pop up on their infotainment or dash.

If accepted, the vehicle reprograms itself while parked. Others may never see a prompt, but can have the dealer perform the update in-shop. No new parts are needed; it’s a simple electronic control module reflash.

GM told dealers the update applies to both inventory and customer vehicles. Owners can call their dealer with a VIN to confirm eligibility. Service departments use GM’s Global Warranty Management system to check open field actions, not the standard service information VIN search.

Remember, this update won’t make your truck run better, but it could save your engine down the line

If your GM is on the list, take the OTA update when it pops up, or book a quick dealer visit.

Ignoring this one is not a good bet.
