GM makes the Chevy Suburban sound more successful than it really is
General Motors is proud of the redesigned 2025 Chevrolet Suburban, as it should be. It looks like a great family hauler with modern features for work and play. However, GM says the Suburban is defending its position as a sales leader and the numbers aren’t adding up.
Is the Chevy Suburban the best-selling SUV?
The Chevy Suburban and Chevy Tahoe are often in the top five best-selling SUVs each year. However, they rarely claim the first and second-place spots.
According to CNBC, General Motors promoted the Tahoe and Suburban as segment leaders for over 45 years. This is where I got confused. Instead of letting the SUVs stand on their own, GM has been combining their sales totals.
On that note, when you add the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs to the Tahoe and Suburban figures then the market share has actually reduced from 70% in 2020 to 34.2%.
In 2023, the Ford Expedition sold 73,396 SUVs. The 2023 Suburban sold 52,822 models and the 2023 Tahoe sold 110,326 units. So, the Tahoe did beat the Ford F-150, but the Suburban did not.

The Tahoe has been a stout competitor for years while the Chevy Suburban hasn’t had the same level of success. Also, the Expedition is on track to outsell the Suburban in 2024. The Tahoe currently has a slight lead, but the Expedition could surpass it.
Each of these SUVs just received a complete redesign. The playing field is level for 2025 as these new models compete with a sleek modern style, advanced safety features, and improved comfort.
Sales could dip as Chevrolet and Ford focus on the model changeover. But to say that the Chevy SUVs are both segment leaders is a little misleading.
Instead of combining sales totals from across the board, General Motors should allow the Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, and Yukon models to compete on their own. It’s not like the Ford Expedition is combining sales figures with the Ford Explorer.
