You might be surprised to see a German luxury brand near the top of this year’s reliability rankings. Predictably, Toyota, Subaru, Lexus, and Honda still dominate the top four. But fifth place goes to BMW. Here’s what that means.

Every year, Consumer Reports asks 380,000 vehicle owners to share any problems they’ve had with their cars. It compares all model years from 2000 to 2025 and ranks automakers based on predicted reliability.

That means its analysts expect BMWs — both used and new — to give drivers less grief than vehicles from 21 other brands. This doesn’t include work done under warranty or recall, because drivers still must take their cars to the dealership and deal with a loaner.

BMW earned a 58 out of 100 for predicted reliability. The overall winner was Toyota with a 66 out of 100. The average European automaker scored 50 out of 100, so BMW had a strong showing. The average U.S. brand fell to 41 out of 100.

Which BMW models earned the highest marks

So which BMW is most reliable? The BMW 2 Series was the highest-scoring European vehicle this year. Consumer Reports warns that current PHEV variations of reliable models — such as the X5 PHEV — are proving less reliable than their traditional counterparts. That said, full hybrids, such as the Prius, are proving very reliable. The next generation of PHEVs may catch up.
