General Motors Builds New V8 and Hybrid Engines for Next-Gen Trucks
Are you ready for more power? General Motors is! That’s why next-generation trucks like the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are getting more muscle. They could become more efficient as well with new V8 and hybrid engines.
General Motors has new engines for next-gen trucks
General Motors is doing things differently from Ram and Toyota. The Ram 1500 briefly dropped its V8 engine, and sales plummeted. However, the HEMI is officially back. Also, the Toyota Tundra dropped its insanely reliable V8 engine, and there are no signs of it returning.
But the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will maintain V8 power. Plus, these trucks could gain more muscle and become more efficient as new V8 and hybrid engines are in the works for 2027.
Going hybrid is a smart choice as the Ford F-150 Hybrid is the most popular Ford truck engine. That’s GM’s biggest rival, as its sales for 2025 decimated those of Ram and Toyota.
According to AutoBlog, a Gen 6 pushrod-driven V8 small-block V8 will debut with the new trucks. Also, specifying thicker oils should quell reliability issues with the current V8 engines.
The existing turbocharged four-cylinder engine is expected to remain available for lower trim levels. But the future of the turbo-diesel engines is currently uncertain.
Also, a plug-in hybrid powertrain is supposedly under development for the GMC Sierra. The electrified option will most likely debut later in 2027, after the ICE options. It could become available with the Silverado if it’s popular among Sierra drivers.
Other things to expect may include higher towing and payload capacities. Hopefully, coil spring rear suspension setups are in the works to improve comfort. Plus, it’s safe to expect bigger screens and advanced tech.
