Are we stuck in a loop? Is it Groundhog Day again? General Motors has been facing an issue related to catastrophic failure in V8 engines. During a recall, the automaker suggested switching to a different type of oil to address the issue. Now it’s suggesting another type of oil.

General Motors suggests using a different oil for failing V8 engines again

Trying the same thing over and over while expecting different results is insane, right? Well, General Motors might be off its rocker, unless a new recommendation actually solves a massive problem related to failing V8 engines.

The L87 6.2-liter V8 problem is related to rod bearing contamination and crankshafts that can fall out of spec. The initial recall for this issue involves having the engines inspected.

Previously, OW-20 oil was recommended for the engines. But GM mandated that if engines passed inspection, they needed Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40 oil instead. If they failed inspection, they got replaced.

But according to Car and Driver, it’s time to change oil types again. GM issued a bulletin to dealers instructing them to use Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 now.

Reportedly, the 0W-40 oil corrected the issue related to the recall. However, the FS 0W-40 is more affordable and widely available to provide savings.

The vehicles in the initial recall include:

  • 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe models.
  • 2021-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon CL, and Cadillac Escalade models.

Also, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the recall. Drivers claim that the recall didn’t fix the engine problem, and 600,000 vehicles may be at risk. There are reports of engine failure after having the oil changed.
