General Motors Is Building New V8 Engines for Next Generation Trucks
While many automakers are turning away from V8 engines, General Motors is going against the trend. Instead of developing turbocharged V6 units, it’s sticking to small-block success. There will be two new sizes in upcoming trucks, SUVs, and cars.
General Motors is building new V8 engines
General Motors is committed to its $854 million investment to build new V8 engines. The two new small-block options will include a 5.7-liter size and a 6.6-liter unit.
Information remains pretty sparse at the moment. However, the sixth-generation small block engines are expected to be used in Chevrolet and GMC models. It’s safe to expect their application in trucks and SUVs.
However, here’s where it gets juicy. The new engines are also expected to be placed in the next-generation Chevy Corvette. So, this iconic car is safe from going exclusively electric.
The smaller V8 engine is expected to be optimized for efficiency and performance. Rumors suggest that it will be six percent more efficient in options like the Chevy Silverado.
But the larger 6.6-liter V8 is expected to be all about performance. It should give the next-generation Corvette a substantial boost. There haven’t been any comments made about potential displacement.
However, it’s safe to expect multiple displacement options. The new generation of V8 engines could mean that existing options, such as the 6.2-liter LT4 V8 options are about to be replaced.
Of course, according to Road and Track, we need to remember that these are just rumors at the moment. However, recent widebody Corvette teasers have the engine cover area hidden. This supports the theory that multiple new powertrain options are on the way.
