Well, this is awkward for the General Motors development team. Especially as it drops Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to build its own software. A glitch in the GM Rewards program accidentally allows people to pay off their cars for free.

General Motors glitch allows drivers to pay off cars for free

If you own a General Motors vehicle, don’t get too excited. The glitch that allowed you to pay off your car for free with the GM Rewards program has been removed.

However, that didn’t stop drivers from exploiting the loophole to pay off the balance of their vehicle loans for free. For example, one owner of a 2024 Cadillac Escalade V figured out that you could gain thousands of dollars worth of points for free.

So, they quickly racked up 5,973,000 points and used them to cover the rest of their $59,370 loan. According to Jalopnik, a GM Reward point is worth a penny. So you have to get tons of points for a sizable reward.

But members could earn up to 16,000 points by completing surveys and watching videos with the app. You couldn’t repeat the process on the same account, but you could create new accounts and transfer them.

The loophole allowed drivers to get millions of points in about five minutes. Also, the points could be spent on things that customers were expected to spend money on, such as finance loans.

However, it was supposed to make money by providing points on continued spending, such as on new vehicle purchases, accessories, and service visits. Instead, it was giving away cars

The automaker has removed promotional point offers, but didn’t revoke points that users already accrued. GM still intends to try making money with the loyalty program.
