The automotive industry doesn’t need to face another massive parts shortage. But in case that happens, General Motors is taking steps to keep production firing on all cylinders. It held an urgent supplier meeting to keep crucial parts rolling in.

General Motors takes steps to protect production during the auto supply shortage

There are concerns about a looming auto supply shortage. Remember when the semi-conductor shortage decimated production of multiple popular cars, such as the Ford F-150, during COVID-19?

General Motors was heavily impacted as well. Now the auto parts supplier First Brands Group is tied to bankruptcy after facing several lawsuits in Detroit.

The group is a global manufacturer of brakes, brake parts, towing equipment, lubrication products, filtration products, spark plugs, fuel pumps, and water pumps.

General Motors urges suppliers to identify any direct or any direct links to the supplier. According to GM Authority, this is to proactively address risks that may impact vehicle production.

At the moment, popular SUVs, trucks, and cars like the Chevrolet Silverado are operating at full capacity. GM was also one of many fleets that approved providing a $48 million cash advance to keep things running during the bankruptcy process.

Currently, there is still an ongoing semiconductor chip shortage. It’s primarily impacting Volkswagen, Mercedes, and Nissan. Also, Toyota and Lexus face limited inventory levels.

A massive fire at an aluminum plant in New York has created trouble for Ford and Jeep. The plant was the biggest supplier of automotive grade aluminum in the United States. Plus, new tariffs are making it more expensive to source items from other countries.
