SUVs might be the most star-spangled idea to come out of Detroit. Honestly, what could be more American than dropping a passenger body on a full-size truck chassis so you and all your kin can rip around the woods or tow anything you darn well like? Even the largest SUVs today are built on half-ton trucks. But for a brief, wondrous moment, Ford offered the Excursion, which was built on a three-quarter-ton truck chassis. It was a monster. And now collectors are catching on.

The 2000–2005 Ford Excursion

In 2000, Ford introduced a wild new vehicle. The “Excursion” was a full-size, third-row Ford SUV. But instead of sharing a chassis with the F-150, it was built on an F-250 Super Duty chassis. It had a similar eggshell grille to the Expeditions and Explorers of the day. But in every other way, it looked like a true Super Duty. Visually, its “barn door” rear doors set it apart from the Expedition.

Ford offered the Excursion with a 5.4-liter Triton V8 or even the 6.8-liter Triton V10. But you could also get it with a diesel. Early Excursions had the legendary 7.3-liter Power Stroke V8. Later, they got the 6.0-liter Power Stroke. The 7.3-liter Power Stroke Excursions had a 10,000-pound towing capacity. For a 2000 model year SUV, that was absurd.

Collectors are catching on to this extinct titan

In 2021, a Ford Excursion raised some eyebrows when it sold on the Bring a Trailer auction site for $70,500. That said, it was nearly factory-fresh with just 12,000 miles. In early June 2024, another diesel Power Stroke sold for a more reasonable $30,000 on the same site. But it had the problematic 6.0-liter diesel. It also had 101,000 miles.

At the time of this writing, a 43,000-mile Ford Excursion is on Bring a Trailer. It has the more desirable 7.3-liter Power Stroke V8. It’s also finished in a green and beige two-tone paint job that perfectly complements its Eddie Bauer Edition interior. This SUV is a time capsule. And, love it or hate it, it’s the epitome of pre-recession Detroit. It’s already bid up to $60,000, with three days left in the auction. How high will it go? That’s anyone’s guess. But I’m sure Excursion owners everywhere are watching carefully. You can check out a walkaround in the video embedded below:
