I have a confession: I wore Carhartt for years before realizing it is a Detroit brand. Sure, I grew up working on trucks and muscle cars from the Motor City. But I thought our Carhartt jackets were simply what we wore while wrenching on them. I later learned they were what factory workers wore while building them.

Hamilton Carhartt founded his workwear company in 1889. Its original location sat at what is now 1605 Michigan Avenue. That site later became the Corktown plant. Among other things, Carhartt built uniforms for early Ford factory workers.

Henry Ford founded Ford Motor Co. in 1903. His first factory stood at what is now 6520 Mack Avenue. In 1904, he moved operations to the Piquette Avenue Plant in Midtown. That move marked the beginning of Model T production.

It comes as no surprise that Carhartt outfitted Ford factory workers from the 1920s through the 1970s. Now, the two Detroit icons are teaming up again.

First and foremost, Carhartt will supply apparel for Ford’s dealer technician uniform program.

At the 2026 Detroit auto show, the companies also revealed a brief teaser. It previewed a Carhartt Edition 2027 Ford Super Duty. The video shows only the wheel and fender of a 6.7-liter Power Stroke Super Duty. The truck rolls onto a manhole cover in a Detroit alley. The shot highlights wheels inspired directly by manhole cover designs.

A partnership about more than clothes and trucks

Ford CEO Jim Farley frequently talks about workers in the “essential economy.” He means people who work with their hands in jobs artificial intelligence cannot replace.

To support that workforce, Ford and Carhartt are partnering with the TechForce Foundation. The foundation provides scholarships, mentorship, grants, job connections, and other resources to students pursuing technician careers.

The companies are also investing in bringing ToolBank USA to Detroit. The nonprofit supplies local charities with tools, equipment, and expertise for volunteer projects. Ford is donating an F-150 equipped with Pro Power Onboard to the organization’s Detroit chapter.
