Ford warns that certain vehicles with a 2.0-liter engine and a factory-installed block heater could catch fire in cold weather. The risk occurs when owners plug in the heater. Here are the makes and models included in the recall:

  • 2013–18 Ford Focus cars
  • 2013–19 Ford Escape SUVs
  • 2015–16 Lincoln MKC SUVs

An engine block heater is exactly what it sounds like. Drivers plug it into external power to warm the engine in extreme cold. The heater allows oil to circulate better and helps engines warm faster. In Arctic climates, or on older diesel trucks, block heaters can be essential.

Ford offers block heaters from the factory. The system typically replaces a drain plug with a heating element. When plugged in, the heater warms the engine coolant so the vehicle starts more easily. However, some of these heaters may be doing much more.

Why the block heater can cause fires

Ford says malfunctioning heaters can overheat and crack coolant passages. Leaking coolant can drip onto the heater’s electronics. That combination can cause a short circuit and spark a fire.

The automaker plans to contact affected owners directly. In the meantime, drivers can call Ford at 866-436-7332. Ask whether recall 26S01 affects your vehicle. Owners can also enter their VIN at NHTSA.gov. Ford dealerships will replace affected block heaters at no cost.
