Ford just issued another huge recall. This one is for 492,145 Explorer SUVs built in 2016 and 2017. After dozens of customers complained of trim pieces blowing off their SUVs, the NHTSA pressured Ford to issue a recall. But the automaker still doesn’t have a system to fix the problem. What’s wild is this may not be the first trim piece to fall off these Explorers.

A vehicle’s “B” pillars support the roof and divide the front and rear windows. According to the latest recall, Ford is warning that the plastic trim on the outside of 2016-17 Explorer B pillars may come unglued and blow away.

Obviously, this isn’t a malfunctioning piece of safety equipment, like the Takata airbag issue or the Ford Expedition’s brake line recall. But it’s not safe for parts to just blow off moving vehicles. They could damage that vehicle or others. So Ford is recalling affected Explorers.

Will Ford dealerships do a better job attaching these trim pieces? Will the automaker manufacture brand new pieces of trim? The company has yet to develop a repair procedure. In the meantime, Ford is warning Explorer drivers that the trim may begin to op off at the top of the front doors.

Ford is recalling multiple Explorer SUVs shedding exterior trim

Here’s the kicker, this isn’t the only piece of trim that may blow off these Explorers. In winter, 2024, Ford issues a recall for 2011 to 2019 Explorers. That was for the exterior trim blowing off the “A” pillars of those SUVs. Those are the pillars between the windshield and front windows.

The huge A-pillar recall affected two million Explorers. Ford admitted that the clip holding the trim to the pillars might not be engaging properly.

Are these recalls related? Possibly. Ford is blaming the problem on improper manufacturing techniques. So perhaps it is using the same connectors and adhesives on both A and B pillars.
