‘It was so violent’ Ford F-150’s rear axle suddenly breaks while driving
Nothing ruins your day like an unexpected breakdown. One man didn’t know his Ford F-150 had any problems until the rear axle suddenly broke in traffic. The owner thought he was rear-ended due to the loud bang and brutal shaking that occurred.
Ford F-150 suddenly gets a broken rear axle
TikTok user and Ford F-150 owner, @txhawgkilla, is here to share his experience about discovering a sheared-off axle nut.
He was unaware of this problem, but there is a recall that involves 2021 – 2023 models with the heavy-duty tow package, like his truck.
While he was driving, he was unaware that his F-150 had any problems. But while making a left turn, he thought he was rear-ended. Suddenly, he heard and felt a long bang as his truck violently shook.
The truck wouldn’t go anywhere, and he jumped out to find that there wasn’t any visible damage, and called a tow truck. Turns out the rear axle broke due to having an axle bolt that can shear off.
Reportedly, he hasn’t come across any other owners with a broken axle. Also, the parts are a little delayed, so he’s in his backup. But he feels like this is something drivers need to know about.
I’ve reached out to txhawgkilla to see if his truck has been fixed and if he’s experienced any other problems.
Ford F-150 axle bolt recall
Ford issued a recall for F-150 trucks due to axle bolts that can break, leading to vehicle rollaways and a sudden loss of power. The recall involved movies with the Trailer Two Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty rear axle with a 3.4 float design.
The broken axle bolt may damage the axle hub splines that transfer power from the axle to the wheel to rotate. Drivers may notice a clicking or rattling noise if the rear axle has become loose.
To fix the problem, Ford technicians will replace the axle shaft assemblies with an improved design free of charge.
