Why bother waiting for an Uber when there’s an unlocked ambulance nearby? That seemed to be Ariel Marchan-Le Quire’s logic when she stole an emergency vehicle in the middle of the night in Fort Myers, Florida. Deputies say her wild joyride included swerving across lanes, nearly flipping the stolen ambulance, and an inexplicable stop at a gas station. Add a GPS tracker, a high-speed chase, and a taser to the mix, and you’ve got the latest chapter in Florida’s legendary history of bizarre crimes.

The chaos started at HealthPark Medical Center, where Marchan-Le Quire , a “transient Fort Myers Beach woman,” had just been discharged. Rather than calling for a ride, she helped herself to the empty ambulance parked outside.

A dumbfounded EMT had a bizarre exchange with the equally-shocked dispatcher.

 “911, what is your emergency?”

“Hi, I’m a paramedic…we just finished up a transport at Golisano Hospital, and as I walked out, um, our ambulance was driving down the road.”

Tracking down the stolen ambulance

Marchan-Le Quire wasn’t able to get far. The onboard GPS unit quickly led police deputies to her location, but when they confronted her at the gas station, she wasn’t about to hand over the keys. Instead, she sped off with the stolen ambulance’s emergency lights flashing, weaving recklessly across multiple lanes of traffic.

“She’s all over the road,” one deputy said in helicopter footage. “It’s running red lights. It’s going to end up killing someone.” Another officer reported the ambulance “purposely driving crazy,” hitting curbs, and nearly flipping over during sharp turns.

At one point, Marchan-Le Quire stopped the stolen ambulance and appeared ready to surrender. But just as deputies approached, she took off again, leaving them no choice but to disengage for safety. Fortunately, the sheriff’s helicopter tracked the stolen vehicle from above, recording every erratic maneuver.

The joyride finally came to a halt on South Tamiami Trail, where deputies boxed the vehicle in. Bodycam footage shows officers surrounding the stolen ambulance with guns drawn. Even then, Marchan-Le Quire didn’t go quietly. She resisted arrest, forcing deputies to use a taser to subdue her.

“You could have killed somebody,” one deputy told her as she struggled on the pavement.

Marchan-Le Quire now faces charges including grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding, resisting an officer, and theft of emergency equipment. Her next ride won’t involve flashing lights or sirens—it’ll be a trip to the courtroom.

Whether she stopped at the gas station for fuel or snacks remains unclear, but one thing’s certain: this midnight adventure ended in anything but a clean getaway. Florida, you’ve done it again. See the chase footage in the video embedded below:
