Florida Man Driving Stolen Truck Flees, Hides in Swamp 2 Days With His Gun and Meth
Another week, another wild Florida man story. This one includes a stolen truck, meth, and a good old-fashioned swamp stakeout.
Earl Dorey, 37, was one of three men spotted driving a stolen truck north of Orlando. When police tried to pull the truck over, Dorey had other ideas. He bailed and sprinted into De Leon Springs State Park.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office released bodycam footage of the chase. When police officers finally caught up with Dorey, he pointed a gun at them. Then he pointed it at himself. When they backed off, he ran deeper into the state park.
But this is Florida. Where there’s a spring, there’s a swamp. And soon, Dorey was up to his waist in more than trouble. In the footage, a deputy yells, “He’s in the water…Dude, just give the f— up!”
How the chase spiraled into a two-day Florida swamp standoff
Dorey had no intention of giving “the f— up.” He pressed on. Slogging through the wet, muddy swamp soon weighed him down. He shed his shoes and pants so he could swim and walk deeper into the swamp.
Deputies staked out the swamp, which is surrounded by urban areas, and tried to wait him out. By Friday, they went in with K-9 units and found him covered in mud. After two days of hiding, officers say, “His only complaint is that he’s thirsty and his legs hurt.”
Authorities took Dorey to the hospital. When he recovered, deputies booked him into jail on his pre-existing warrants. New charges include aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, fleeing law enforcement, and possession of methamphetamine.
