Florida man in scuba gear robs $10,000+ from Disney World restaurant boat, swims away
If there was a Florida version of Ocean’s 11, it might look like this bizarre scuba diver heist in Disney World. This robber’s expertise getting around underwater allowed him to make off with thousands of dollars. As yet, he hasn’t been caught.
The Disney Springs Steamfish heist
Disney Springs, previously called Downtown Disney, is a shopping and dining district in the Disney World park. Floating on this pond is a replica steamboat that houses a restaurant called Paddlefish. How does one rob the Paddlefish? With a scuba tank, of course.
Sources close to the ongoing investigation say a scuba diver swam up to the Paddlefish shortly after midnight on Monday. He climbed aboard, stashed his scuba gear, spray‑painted over a security camera, then walked into the restaurant.
Two employees were in the manager’s office, counting the cash from the night and depositing it in the office safe. The thief reportedly didn’t brandish a weapon, but he still managed to force both employees to close their eyes and go to the corner of the room. Then he tied them up. Once the employees were secured, the thief stole between $10,000 and $20,000 in cash. As it was the end of the night Sunday, he may have been able to nab all the cash the restaurant had collected during the weekend.
Investigators suspect he put his scuba gear back on and jumped back into the pond for what must have been a very slow getaway. But once the employees freed themselves and reported the robbery, security and the police searched the premises immediately and did not find him.
He was approximately 5′10″ and thin. During the robbery he wore tight‑fitting clothing and a beanie. He did not carry a weapon and no customers were present during the robbery. On Monday, the restaurant reopened as normal.
