Florida Man Rescues Pregnant Woman in Sinking Car
A Good Samaritan truly saved the day in Florida last week. When a pregnant woman drove off the highway, he dove into the water to pull her out.
Logan Hayes later remembered he’d been stuck in traffic on I-95 when he realized a vehicle was sinking in a nearby pond. “I just couldn’t believe that happened. Couldn’t believe that at that exact moment I happened to be driving by.“ Despite the shock, he didn’t hesitate. Hayes dove into the water and swam toward the car.
For a very different rescue techique, read about the dad who used ratchet straps to save mother and toddler from a sinking car.
Hayes had been commuting to his day job. Luckily for the driver in the water, that job is working on a private fishing boat. “I’ve had other instances where I’ve helped people to shore, surfing and all kinds of stuff, but I definitely felt way more control in those instances.”
But with the car sinking fast, Hayes did what he had to do. “I swam up to the car, the back passenger door was the only door that was …still enough above water.”
Hayes was able to open the door. He found a woman panicking in the driver’s seat, so he instructed her to come to him. He told WPBF, “And so, she comes in between the two front seats and climbs … she’s coming into the backseat. The car is now starting to tilt more and roll down and more over. It’s water flooding the car.”
Good samaritan realizes he’s rescuing a pregnant woman
As the car sank, the woman was able to climb out the back door and into the pond. “She landed in the water next to me, and I grabbed her around her hips.” Hayes suddenly discovered he was attempting a double rescue. “That’s when I realized she was pregnant…”It clicked: like a different level of how crazy this was.”
Hayes had helped the pregnant driver out of the car without a moment to spare. “When I got a hold of her and turned around, the car was already under the water and gone.” But the two were still treading water in the middle of a pond. “So, I swam her to shore, it’s like 40 or 50 feet from where the car was sunk.”
By the time Hayes reached the shore, Fire Department rescue divers were already on scene, checking the car for additional survivors and beginning recovery. Luckily, there was no one else on board.
Authorities transported the woman to a hospital in Fort Pierce, where she gave birth a few hours later. Her fiancé immediately contacted Hayes to thank him for his heroism. The family and the authorities have yet to release further updates on both the woman and baby’s condition.
