‘I was terrified,’ Florida man points gun at student driver
I’ve heard of adults putting “student driver” bumper stickers on their vehicles just so other drivers will be nicer. Apparently, that doesn’t always work: When a 67‑year‑old Florida man got impatient with a real student driver, he decided to pull a gun and point it at her stepfather.
An unnamed teenage girl had just gotten her learner’s permit, so her stepfather took her out to practice driving. She pulled up to a flashing yellow light and felt anxious about turning left across traffic.
Her supportive stepfather said, “If you don’t feel comfortable, don’t do it. Don’t get into an accident. Stay in your comfort zone.” But not everyone on the road was so supportive.
‘I need you to calm down,’ Florida man points gun at a student driver
James Bottoms got impatient at the slow car ahead. The teen driver remembers, “This guy behind me kept creeping up and creeping up and laying on the horn.”
The stepfather spoke with the man driving the truck behind them. “I said, ‘Hey man, you need to calm down. I’m teaching my daughter how to drive. Have a little bit of patience. Just relax. If you’re that late, you should’ve left a little bit earlier.’”
Then the situation took a dramatic turn: “He proceeded to point a firearm through the window at me.”
The teenage girl remembers, “I was very scared. I was very, very shaky. I was terrified.”
Deputies later arrested Bottoms and charged him with two felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon—without intent to kill. He has yet to post his $10,000 bond, so he is still in jail. Bottoms claims he thought the stepfather was pointing something at him, so he drew his gun because he feared for his life. He also claims he chambered a round and pointed the gun in the air instead of aiming directly at the student driver and her stepfather in the car ahead.
