Florida Highway Patrol reintroduces the marked 5.0 Ford Mustang for the 1st time in 30 years [Watch]
The police agency recently showed off the new pursuit-rated pony car in a video on Instagram. With it, Florida Highway Patrol revived memories of the aggressive black-and-tan Fox Body 5.0 Mustangs it once used in the late ’80s and early ’90s.
Back then, troopers relied on the Mustang’s lightweight chassis and 225-horsepower V8 to chase down speeders across Florida’s long, flat highways.
Now, the Ford Mustang returns in modern S550 form
This isn’t a stripped-down novelty. It’s a full-fledged pursuit vehicle built for duty. The updated model features a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 producing 450 horsepower and comes equipped with police-specific hardware.
That includes upgraded cooling systems, heavy-duty suspension, lighting, and the essential interior equipment for emergency response and communications. The patrol livery covers the Mustang’s sleek body, with the classic black-and-tan paint giving it a nostalgic edge.
The department teased the return in a lighthearted post. In it, the agency suggests the Mustang might help FHP reclaim bragging rights in cruiser design.
They even took a playful jab at their previously unveiled Corvette patrol car
Hinting the Mustang could be a stronger fan favorite.
FHP encouraged followers to vote in an ongoing contest for best-looking cruiser. The group linked to a national poll in its bio.
While the S550 Mustang is actually nearing the end of its production run, Florida’s move to bring it into service gives the outgoing model one more job. It’s fast, it’s loud, and yes, it’s street legal.
