Florida Man Tries to Drive Bronco Over LGBTQ+ Run Club
It seems Florida is good for an iconic “Florida Man” news story every week. The exploits range from wacky cautionary tales—don’t steal an entire locomotive for a joyride—to charmingly quirky moments, like confronting a home invader while wearing Batman pajamas. But one Bronco driver has managed to give Florida Man a genuinely bad name.
Ihab Mustafa El Mahmoud was driving through West Palm Beach when he encountered a running club. As a running club aficionado, I’ll admit runners can be annoying when a herd crowds a lane or blocks an intersection. But violence is never the answer. El Mahmoud apparently never got the memo.
The 46-year-old believed one of the runners made a comment toward him. Even if someone said something off-color, it would have been the perfect opportunity to be the bigger man and drive away. Instead, El Mahmoud pointed the Bronco at the runners and hit the gas.
He reportedly tried to run over multiple runners. They either dodged him or he missed.
He turned around and tried again
That wasn’t enough for El Mahmoud. He wheeled around and made a second attempt. This time, he veered off the pavement and up an embankment, giving the runners a chance to sprint to safety.
After attempting vehicular manslaughter, the smart move would have been stopping and facing the consequences. Instead, he fled and added to his list of potential charges. He raced 1.6 miles east on Okeechobee Boulevard, pulled into a public parking garage, and removed his license plates. But security cameras aren’t exactly a rare invention. Police found him within minutes.
It turns out El Mahmoud had targeted an LGBTQ+ run club. So instead of two counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony and one count of reckless driving, he may face additional hate crime charges.
