Florida Attorney Knocks Out 67-Year-Old Cruise Ship Employee
Florida is good for a steady stream of zany “Florida Man” stories. But Phillip Ortiz, 38, is giving Florida a bad name. He had barely boarded a cruise ship when he got into a fight with an elderly employee — and knocked the man unconscious.
Ortiz, a Miami-based attorney with The Firm Law Group, was boarding a Norwegian Encore cruise with his wife and kids. The ship left Miami on Nov. 22. The couple was reportedly walking around the boat when they tried to enter an off-limits hallway. A 67-year-old employee told them the hall was restricted.
Ortiz’s response? “Who the f—k are you to tell me what I can and can’t do.”
To drive his point home, Ortiz shoved the employee. His wife shoved the employee too. The man pushed them away, which reportedly enraged Ortiz. The lawyer began to wrestle with him. Ortiz tripped the victim and landed with his full weight on top of the elderly man.
Witnesses say the victim briefly lost his pulse
After being slammed to the ground, the man reportedly lost his pulse. Witnesses performed CPR while Ortiz fled. Ship nurses and security rushed the man to the University of Miami Hospital, where he regained consciousness.
Authorities arrested Ortiz and charged him with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older. According to the New York Post, the ship’s security footage matched the victim’s and witnesses’ accounts. Ortiz pleaded not guilty. His attorney claimed the victim was drunk and blocking Ortiz from reaching his children.
