California firefighter’s truck plummets 200 feet

A California firefighter from Kern County was on patrol around 6:20 PM when an incident within an incident (IWI) occurred near the 5,370-acre Canyon Fire.

His name hasn’t been released to the public. The man was driving a pickup truck in a remote area of Castaic. He was patrolling for hotspots or flare-ups.

While driving along the ridgeline in rugged conditions, the vehicle lost its footing. It fell off of Romero Canyon Road, falling 200 feet below.

The truck violently rolled and slammed into the terrain multiple times. The driver was ejected during the plummet. Rescue and emergency crews immediately sprang into action.

According to KTLA, the driver received treatment on the scene by paramedics. Then he was airlifted via helicopter to the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia.

Despite suffering severe injuries, the man is currently in stable condition. There is an ongoing investigation into the cause of the rollover crash.

This accident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with working in public safety. Three other firefighters have suffered injuries while battling the Canyon Fire. Luckily, the injuries are only minor.

But progress during the Canyon Fire battle has been made. As of Saturday morning, the flames were 28% contained. All evacuation orders were downgraded to evacuation warnings. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
