‘Overpriced,’ expert reveals 3 dealership parts ripoffs
Why do people bring their cars to the dealership for service, when it can cost 2x or 3x as much as a private shop? Most hope for better service and better “original equipment manufacturer” replacement parts. Chris, an expert from Beachside Auto Parts revealed the three parts he believes are better to buy aftermarket:
- Wiper blades
- Brake pads
- Engine oil
1- Dealership wiper blades: ‘straight up overpriced’
In a TikTok video that’s earned 26,000+ likes, Chris warns dealership wiper blades are “straight up overpriced.” He says “You’re paying $30 to $50 for the same performance you can get with $12 to $20 blades at your parts store.”
I’ll add that many parts stores will even install your new wiper blades for free. I’ve previously shared that many wiper blades have a wear indicator dot that turns yellow when you should replace them.
2- OEM brake pads: ‘average’
Chris argues that “OEM brake pads are usually dusty, noisy, and average.” Why would an OEM ever put “average” brake pads in a car? Because it is trying to build a car at the lowest price point possible. But for just a few dollars extra, you can upgrade your performance. “Brands like Wagner and Power Stop offer better stopping power, quieter performance, and less dust.”
I’ll add that I replace my own brake pads, so I opted for the premium auto parts store brand, which has a lifetime warranty. When I had to replace them again, I just brought my old set into the store and they gave me a new set for free.
3- Dealership engine oil: ‘bulk blend’
Finally Chris warns that just because “fancy dealership oil” has an OEM logo, it isn’t anything special. “It’s usually rebranded bulk blend that just meets the bare minimum specs. At a parts store, you get real choices: Amsoil, Mobil 1, Pennzoil Ultra, stronger additives, cleaner engines, and better protection.”
I’ll add that minimum oil requirements are different in the U.S. and Europe. So if you’re buying parts store oil, make sure your new stuff is up to snuff.
