We have a winner! Only, this is a contest that automakers don’t want to win. It’s no secret that electric vehicle sales have been declining. However, one EV flop got hit the hardest in 2025. Now it struggles with $800 million worth of inventory that drivers don’t want.

The biggest EV flop of 2025 leaves an automaker stuck with trucks

Somebody give me a nice ‘whomp whomp’ noise. The biggest EV flop of 2025 is the Tesla Cybertruck. So much for millions of reservations, as this electric truck has become impossible to move.

It sold about 39,000 trucks during 2024. Then in 2025, sales dropped to 19,000. This was the largest sales drop among all electric cars in America, including the Ford F-150 Lightning.

The Ford F-150 Lightning sold 33,150 models in 2024 and 27,300 trucks in 2025. Production of this model ended in December, 2025.

According to Vice, Elon Musk claimed that the Cybertruck would sell 250,000 models a year. However, Tesla was barely able to deliver 6,400 models in 2025. Then, the trucks that did make it to drivers were plagued with quality issues.

Over 10,000 unsold units are clogging up dealerships. They’re also in unused factory and mall parking lots. They get picked up on images from space.

Elon Musk sold 1,000 Cybertruck models to SpaceX. This provided $100 million in revenue for Tesla and handled a small part of the inventory issue. The future of the truck is currently unclear.

However, a few different electric cars benefit from sales growth. The Chevrolet Equinox EV, Honda Prologue, Mustang Mach-E, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 each ended the year with substantial increases. Electric SUVs are faring better than massive trucks.
