Some questions on our Facebook page open the floodgates. This one sure did. After years of hearing every jab at EVs, from their weight to their oddball designs, I expected a mixed crowd. Instead, the answers to “Would you ever go back?” revealed something far more interesting. Folks who have lived with these cars long enough to get past the novelty seem to know exactly where they stand.

Below are the themes that surfaced the most, along with the direct answers that shaped them.

EV Drivers Answer Whether They’d Ever Go Back to Gas Cars

They’re never going back

Many drivers didn’t hesitate. They like the quiet power, the predictable costs, and the feeling that once they switched, there was no reason to return.

One commenter wrote, “Mine currently costs 3 pence per mile, does 0 to 60 in 6 seconds, has instant torque without having to change down a gear and has room for 5 adults.”

Another added that when neighbors scrape ice off their windshields, their EV “is programmed to warm the cabin automatically.”

You could feel the confidence in the folks who said, “Never! Currently own three electric vehicles,” and the one who summed it up with, “Nope.. addicted to electrons.” One longtime owner said, “Never…. and I’m 8 years in and counting.”

Another owner said several years of EV driving required only “a cabin filter and rotated the tires. 30 dollars for [maintenance] over the course of three years.”

Mixed garages and moderate views

Others believe the best setup blends both worlds, as some keep a foot in both camps because each type fills a purpose.

One person said, “One gas and one EV at home.” Another said, “EV for the daily, naturally aspirated port injected manual for the weekend.”

“I have an electric and one PHEV. They are used for different things. One cannot replace the other.”

Performance lovers also chimed in. One said, “My next one is the S Plaid.” Another said, “I can’t think of a better daily driver with kids than my S Plaid.”

Those who still prefer petrol

A few drivers can’t shake the, er, “joy” of combustion.

One said, “I prefer the roar of a V8 over the [whining] of an EV driver anytime.” Another said, “I will stick to ICE.” Some want the engagement that EVs cannot offer. One put it like this: “One day a week so I can shift my own gears.”

A handful had tried EVs and decided against them. One driver shared that after six months with an EV, they switched back when their spouse tried the gas truck and preferred it.

A sense of forward movement

Many framed the question as evolution. One commenter said, “Would I go back to CRT TV? Would I go back to dial phones? Would I go back to ICE cars? Hell no.” Another: “Never, it would be like going back to horse and cart.”

And somewhere in the middle sat the folks still figuring it out. “Could I go back to gas? Yes. But would I? I don’t know.”

Like most things in this industry, personal experience drives the verdict.
