Of course Elvis Presley owned a Chevy Silverado
In much of the U.S., it seems you can’t throw a stone without hitting an “Elvis car.” It may be a truck he supposedly drove in the Army or a limousine that reportedly whisked him away from a concert as the audience was assured, “Elvis has left the building.” But the latest Elvis car is actually a truck—a 1976 Chevy Silverado. And this one just makes sense.
This very special 1976 Chevy Silverado will finally see the light of day at an Ohio car show. A local dealership owner snagged it for about $75,000 and would resell it for the right price. For a verified Elvis car, that might be a bargain.
The owner said, “For people who are Elvis fans, the chance to see, touch and sit in (a vehicle) once owned by him is pretty cool.” The only problem is there’s no evidence Presley ever drove it—or sat in it.
Was Elvis Presley actually a truck guy?
What we do know is “The King” paid $8,196.81 for this brand-new two-tone pickup with its rare club cab. You can see his signature on the paperwork. That’s roughly $47,553 in today’s dollars.
We also know Elvis bought it through his local Memphis, Tennessee, General Motors dealership. He frequented the showroom to pick up yet another fleet of all-new Cadillacs for himself and his entourage. So what inspired him to branch out with a pickup truck? Was it to carry his instruments?
Elvis actually had the gear-hauler covered. He had at least two custom Cadillac station wagons built (a 1972 and a 1974). Cadillac didn’t make a station wagon at the time, so Elvis sent a DeVille to the American Sunroof Company, which modified each with a Chevy station wagon roof. Elvis gave the 1972 DeVille wagon to his longtime manager—Colonel Parker—but borrowed it so often during his Vegas residency that the Colonel gave it back.
So did Elvis even take his Silverado home? Absolutely. There’s a picture of the truck in the far bay of the carport at his Graceland home. Graceland was a 14-acre estate, so there’s a very good chance Elvis bought the truck for the property crew to use.
Could Elvis have driven his Chevrolet Silverado? Elvis actually worked as a delivery truck driver before breaking into rock and roll. He would have been right at home behind the wheel of his Silverado. There’s indeed a chance he drove it around his property at some point. But a few months after he bought the truck, he died of a heart attack at just 42 years old.
Elvis Presley’s 1976 Chevrolet Silverado
Elvis Presley and the Chevrolet Silverado may seem like icons from completely different chapters of American history. The King is usually connected to big-finned 1950s Cadillacs or the occasional Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
While Chevrolet’s been building trucks for a century, the Silverado is a relatively simple name change to its C/K truck lineup. The first appearance of the “Silverado” badge was as a premium trim level of its C/K truck. And that was in 1975. So Elvis’ Silverado was one of the first off the line. It became a standalone model name in 1998.
That said, the Silverado seems like a good fit for Presley. While GMC builds “professional grade” pickups, its cousins from Chevrolet focus on style and speed. If Elvis lived today, when trucks can keep up with a Cadillac, he might be a Silverado guy.
