As most drivers look around for police officers, they probably aren’t looking up. However, Wisconsin drivers could be caught by police officers hiding in semi-trucks and buses as the Trooper in a Truck initiative kicks off.

Police officers could catch Wisconsin drivers in semi-trucks

The last place you expect to see a police officer is up in a semi-truck. However, Wisconsin drivers might need to keep an eye out. Fair warning, the Trooper in a Truck campaign is officially getting started to provide better vantage points.

The campaign stems from a partnership between the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association. State troopers are riding along with semi-truck and bus drivers to get a better view of traffic.

According to We Are Green Bay, police officers will be able to easily spot violations such as speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving, and seat belt violations.

After spotting a traffic violation, the troopers in semi-trucks or buses will radio to patrol cars in the area. Then they will respond with the appropriate enforcement action. The end goal is to reduce crashes, especially with commercial vehicles, and to promote safer driving habits.

Wisconsin averages about 7,000 accidents involving large trucks per year. In 2023, these incidents led to 70 deaths. Distracted driving contributes to most of these wrecks.

This is the third year that the initiative will take place in Wisconsin. The campaign has been successful in other states like Nebraska and Arizona as it gains popularity. It could become a national program.

Don’t be surprised if you look up to see a police officer riding shotgun in a semi-truck. They are up there, watching and waiting.
