‘Dang thing just beeping’ How to disable your Ford truck seat belt reminder
I can relate to the frustration of constantly being beeped at in new trucks. There are emergency systems with sensitive notifications, and if you’re only going about 10 feet, the seat belt reminder blares. But there’s a way to take care of this problem if you have a Ford truck.
How to disable your Ford truck seat belt reminder
Ford truck enthusiast and TikTik User, @whitefaceford, just gets it. He understands that when driving through a field or up to your driveway and back, it’s frustrating to have to put your seat belt on.
Sometimes you’re just trying to go check on a fence post, but your truck won’t stop with the loud chiming notifications.
So, he’s helping us out by sharing a secret that Ford doesn’t advertise. The automaker trains people about the protocol, though.
He gets in a Ford Super Duty to demonstrate. First, put the truck in park and make sure the engine is off. Then set the parking brake.
Pull the seatbelt out and give it some slack. Turn on the engine and hold the seatbelt until you see the airbag light turn off and you can see a little yellow indicator.
Then he clicks the seatbelt four times, and the seatbelt light rapidly flashes. He clicks it a fifth time, and “Seat belt warnings” appears on the screen. The indicator still flashes that the driver isn’t wearing their belt.
Basically, you get the warning without the notification beep. Your passenger will have to do this process to turn off their reminder as well.
I’ve reached out to whitefaceford to see if he has any other tips.
Is it illegal to turn off your seat belt reminder?
No, it’s not illegal to disable the seatbelt reminder chime in a Ford truck or any other type of vehicle. In some states, it is illegal to tamper with a vehicle’s safety system, and doing so may result in fines or penalties.
However, the laws primarily focus on wearing your seat belt. Also, disabling safety features could void your vehicle’s warranty. Manufacturers and insurance companies may refuse to cover your claim if they determine that the systems were intentionally tampered with.
Also, automakers warn that turning off safety systems puts yourself and other passengers at great risk during accidents. Bypassing the systems may also lower the vehicle’s safety rating.
Are there other ways to disable a seat belt warning?
Yes, there are a few different ways to disable a seat belt warning, but remember the associated risks. For example, you can disconnect the sensor.
Find the cable running from the bracket and disconnect it. You might need to squeeze a tab to pull the wire out.
You can also purchase items like seatbelt silencers. These are portable devices that can be plugged into the bracket to make your car think your seat belt is plugged in.
You can refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions. Last but not least, spend the three seconds it takes to buckle up to enjoy peaceful silence.
What do the comments say?
Some drivers in the comment section feel like the process of putting your seat belt on is faster and easier than going through the settings.
Others mentioned going to a junk yard to get an old seat belt buckle to use like a silencer. It can be kept in your glove box.
A lot of people mentioned using FOREscan. It’s a software designed for Ford trucks that allows you to access and modify the settings.
Another person shared that they like to plug in the seat belt behind them. But again, doing so is at your own risk!
