In Consumer Reports’ latest rankings, Subaru placed higher for owner satisfaction than any other Japanese brand. Only BMW and EV startup Rivian scored higher overall. The Forester is the Subaru that buyers are most likely to keep for 15 years. Still, drivers are more likely to hold on to three other crossovers even longer. They are the Honda Pilot, Honda CR-V, and Toyota Highlander.

Of all 15-year-old Subaru Foresters still on the road, 9.8% remain with their original owners. The iSeeCars website analyzed resale data from 660,000 vehicles built between 1981 and 2005. The study focused on which models owners keep the longest. The Forester ranked eighth overall and fourth among crossovers.

Executive analyst Karl Brauer believes several factors explain the Forester’s longevity. “The Forester is a reliable vehicle known for its safety and affordability,” said Brauer. “The vehicle offers standard all-wheel drive and impressive fuel economy, which furthers its appeal to practical consumers.”

Why some crossovers beat the Forester for long-term ownership

The Honda Pilot narrowly edged out the Forester. Of the Pilots still on the road after 15 years, 10.4% remain with their original owners. Honda’s smaller CR-V performed even better, with 10.7% still owned by their first buyer.

“The Honda CR-V is among the most spacious vehicles in its class, while the Pilot rivals a minivan in terms of appearance and cargo room,” said Brauer. “These vehicles also have stellar safety and reliability ratings, which make them popular and practical choices for family vehicles.”

Toyota dominated the overall list. The Prius claimed first place. The Tacoma ranked third, followed by the Sienna in fourth and the Tundra in fifth. The 4Runner and Sequoia placed ninth and 10th, respectively. The RAV4 did not crack the top 10. Just 8.7% of RAV4s on the road for more than 15 years remain with their original owners.

The best-performing crossover, and second place overall, was the Toyota Highlander. Of all Highlanders still on the road after 15 years, 12.4% remain with their first owner.

“Along with being a reliable vehicle, the Toyota Highlander is among the most spacious three-row crossovers, making it a popular choice for a practical family vehicle,” said Brauer. It’s hard to justify selling a vehicle that offers legendary reliability and room a family will never outgrow.
