Cow walks onto Florida freeway, causes large fuel leak right before another semi-truck flips over up the road
It was a rough morning for drivers in Taylor County, Florida, yesterday as Highway 19 saw not one, but two major accidents early Tuesday. Things started around 6 a.m. when a semi-truck collided with a cow that had wandered into the roadway. The farm animal caused a fuel spill and a traffic mess outside Athena in northwest Flordia.
Florida Highway Patrol said the truck driver swerved but couldn’t avoid the animal. The impact left the semi jackknifed in the median, with the truck’s fuel tank ruptured and leaking gas onto the road. Officials from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection assessed the damage. They’re still unsure how much fuel spilled. Fortunately, the driver only suffered minor injuries.
Who’s responsible for the bovine collision?
That depends. Florida law (Florida Statutes, Chapter 588) generally holds livestock owners accountable for accidents involving animals if negligence—like failing to secure fencing—is proven. However, in this case, the cow’s owner is still unknown. Without an identified owner, liability could fall to the semi-truck’s insurance company. If the cow owner comes forward and is found negligent, their liability insurance might cover damages.
In any case, before cleanup crews could fully handle the first incident, trouble struck again.
Just 35 minutes later and 10 miles up the highway, another truck accident unfolded.
This time, a tractor-trailer loaded with pine logs was making a left turn out of a commercial trucking property when its load shifted. The Tallahassee Democrat reported that the truck flipped onto its passenger side, spilling logs onto the front of a KOA campground.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. No one else was hurt. The trucking company quickly stepped in to recover the scattered pine logs, with help from local authorities and emergency responders.
Both crashes snarled traffic and kept first responders busy throughout the morning.
